A DMT Digital Bearer Certificate is an email text message representing currency or other value withdrawn from a DMT/ALTA account. Each certificate is encrypted by a passphrase.

Any DMT/ALTA account holder can issue a DMT Digital Bearer Certificate. The holder of the DMT Digital Bearer Certificate can store value outside the DMT system, or can send value over the Internet to another person, or a payee can received multiple payments from payers without even revealing his Claim Number to the payers.

The Certficate ultimately obtains its value by being redeposited into another DMT account. But in the meantime, the Certificate can circulate from person to person as bona fide digital cash, because Certificates can be verified and re-issued without being redeposited.

Here is a sample DMT Digital Bearer Certificate [note: actual certificates are encrypted (as seen in the one at the top of the page), look like GPG or PGP encrypted email, and cannot be read by third parties]:

----------------------End Certificate-------------------

The receiver of such a Certificate obtains its value by either:

1. Exchanging the Certificate for a new Certificate bearing a new passphrase (known only to the receiver); or

2. Depositing the Certificate into a DMT/ALTA account.

Once a certificate has been exchanged or deposited, it is no longer of any value. Attempts to reuse the certificate, or copies of the certificate, will be rejected by the system.

There will be a transaction fee of 1/10 of 1% for any of these three activities—withdrawing, exchanging, or depositing a Certificate.
